About the Book of Judges

Judges covers the turbulent years between Joshua's conquest and the rise of Israel's kings. When the people turned from God, they fell into trouble; when they cried out, he raised up judges to deliver them — only for the cycle to begin again.

Its 21 chapters and 618 verses tell the stories of Deborah, Gideon, Samson and others, and give the book's haunting refrain: "every man did that which was right in his own eyes" (Judges 21:25). Among its heroes are the prophetess Deborah, the three hundred men of Gideon, and the riddling strongman Samson. It is a sober study of what happens to a people who forget their Deliverer — and of a God who keeps answering when they call.
