1 Samuel 16:7

About the Book of 1 Samuel
1 Samuel opens the age of Israel's kings. It follows the prophet Samuel from his miraculous birth to his leadership of the nation, then tells how Israel demanded a king like the nations around them — first the tall Saul, then the shepherd boy David, whom God chose and anointed.
Its 31 chapters and 810 verses hold some of the Bible's most beloved and sobering stories: Hannah's prayer at the tabernacle, the boy Samuel hearing God's voice in the night, David and Goliath, and the friendship of David and Jonathan. At its center stand the great truths Samuel spoke to Saul, "to obey is better than sacrifice" (1 Samuel 15:22), and the words with which David was chosen, "man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart" (1 Samuel 16:7). The book ends with Saul's death on Mount Gilboa and David's lament for him.
