Ruth is a short, tender story of loyalty set in the dark days of the judges. A young Moabite widow follows her mother-in-law Naomi to Bethlehem and there finds not only barley fields but a redeemer, Boaz.
Its 4 chapters and only 85 verses hold one of the most famous pledges of devotion in all of literature: "for whither thou goest, I will go" (Ruth 1:16). The story moves from famine and bereavement to harvest, a midnight meeting at the threshing floor, and the legal drama by which a kinsman-redeemer claims the family name. The book ends with a marriage that leads to the family line of King David — and, in Matthew's genealogy, to Jesus himself.
