Deuteronomy is Moses' farewell to Israel, spoken on the plains of Moab just before the people entered the Promised Land. Its name means "second law," and in it Moses restates the covenant for the generation that would possess the land.
Its 34 chapters and 959 verses include the great command to love God completely — "thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart" (Deuteronomy 6:5) — as well as the promise that God will never leave nor forsake his people (Deuteronomy 31:8). The book gathers three farewell speeches and a closing song, and ends with Moses' death on Mount Nebo, looking across the Jordan at a land he would not enter. Jesus himself quoted this book more than any other when facing temptation.
