About the Book of 2 Samuel

2 Samuel is the story of David's reign over Israel, from his anointing at Hebron to the golden years of the kingdom and their tragic unraveling. It is a book of triumphs and of deep failures, and of a king who, even when he fell, returned to God with a broken heart.

Its 24 chapters and 695 verses cover the conquest of Jerusalem, the bringing of the ark into the city, and God's promise that David's throne would endure forever (2 Samuel 7:16). It also records David's great sin with Bathsheba and Nathan's devastating word, "Thou art the man" (2 Samuel 12:7). The book closes with David's song of praise — "as for God, his way is perfect" (2 Samuel 22:31) — and his final words about the everlasting covenant with his house.
