About the Book of Matthew

Matthew is the first of the four Gospels and the opening book of the New Testament. It presents Jesus as the promised Messiah and King, tracing his lineage to David and Abraham and recording his birth, teaching, miracles, death and resurrection.

Its 28 chapters include the Sermon on the Mount, the Lord's Prayer and the Great Commission. Verses such as Matthew 6:33 and Matthew 11:28 are among the most quoted in all of Scripture, and no book of the Bible is cited more often in early Christian literature. Matthew arranges Jesus' teaching into five great blocks that echo the five books of Moses, and it repeatedly marks the life of Jesus as the fulfillment of prophecy — "that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet." Its account of the wise men, the Beatitudes and the final commission to "all nations" makes this Gospel the natural bridge between the Old Testament and the new covenant.
