Acts is the sequel to Luke's Gospel and the only biblical book that narrates the history of the early church. It tells how the gospel spread from Jerusalem to Judea, Samaria and the ends of the earth.
Its 28 chapters follow Peter and Paul from Pentecost to Rome, recording the church's birth, its first persecution and the missionary journeys that carried the gospel across the Roman world. Acts 1:8 states the book's own outline. The narrative is punctuated by summaries of church growth, dramatic conversions — the Ethiopian official, the Philippian jailer — and by two long trials that carry Paul to the imperial city. Acts also preserves some of the earliest Christian sermons, beginning with Peter's at Pentecost, which converted about three thousand people in a single day.
