Mark is the shortest and most action-driven of the four Gospels. It moves quickly from Jesus' baptism to the cross, telling the story of his miracles, healings and suffering in a style often described as urgent and immediate.
Its 16 chapters make it the briefest account of Jesus' ministry, and the Gospel is best known for introducing readers to the Son of God through deeds more than discourses. The closing verses record the commission to preach the gospel to every creature. Mark's favorite word is "immediately," and the narrative races from one scene to the next with little time for rest. Yet at its center stands one of the quietest turning points in the New Testament: Peter's confession that Jesus is the Christ, followed by the first prediction of the cross. The Gospel ends abruptly at the empty tomb, leaving every reader to answer its own opening question — who is this man?
