Luke is the longest of the four Gospels and the first half of a two-part history that continues in Acts. Written by a physician companion of Paul, it shows particular care for the poor, women, outsiders and the outcast.
Its 24 chapters hold the most complete account of Jesus' birth — including the angels' announcement to the shepherds — and the parables of the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son, which appear only here. Jesus' mission is summarized in Luke 19:10: to seek and to save the lost. Luke also opens with the most detailed birth narratives in the New Testament and closes with the risen Jesus explaining the Scriptures on the road to Emmaus. Its distinctive parables have shaped Western literature, and its canticles — the songs of Mary, Zechariah and Simeon — remain part of Christian worship to this day.
