Zechariah prophesied alongside Haggai to the exiles rebuilding the temple, but his horizons are far wider. Night visions of horses, crowns, and lampstands give way to oracles of a coming King who will reign from Jerusalem, and the New Testament quotes his book more often than many of the prophets.
Its 14 chapters and 211 verses include the famous charge, "not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts" (Zechariah 4:6), and the tender summons, "turn unto me, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will turn unto you" (Zechariah 1:3). Zechariah also prophesies the King riding into Jerusalem "lowly, and riding upon an ass" (Zechariah 9:9), the thirty pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12), and the day when "the LORD shall be king over all the earth" (Zechariah 14:9).
