About the Book of Philemon

Philemon is Paul's shortest surviving letter, a single chapter of breathtaking tact and grace. Onesimus, a runaway slave who has become a believer, is sent back to his master Philemon — not with a command, but with a plea that he be received as a beloved brother.

Its 25 verses are a masterclass in Christian persuasion: Paul writes "though I might be much bold in Christ to enjoin thee that which is convenient, yet for love's sake I rather beseech thee" (Philemon 8-9). He offers to charge any debt to his own account — "if he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account" (Philemon 18) — and closes with the hope of visiting Philemon himself.
