Hebrews is a majestic sermon to believers tempted to turn back from Christ to the old covenant. Its argument runs like a refrain — Jesus is better: better than angels, better than Moses, a better high priest with a better sacrifice and a better hope. It is also the New Testament's great warning against drifting away.
Its 13 chapters and 303 verses open with one of Scripture's most soaring sentences: "God... hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son" (Hebrews 1:1-2). The book defines faith — "now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1) — and parades its heroes in the great roll call of chapter 11. It gives the promise "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee" (Hebrews 13:5) and the charge "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever" (Hebrews 13:8).
