Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king's words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for [this] good [work].

About the Book of Nehemiah

Nehemiah is the story of a cupbearer to a Persian king who became the builder of Jerusalem's walls. When he hears that the city lies in ruins, he prays, obtains the king's favor, and leads the people to rebuild in fifty-two days while enemies plot against them.

Its 13 chapters and 406 verses are full of practical faith: Nehemiah's urgent reply to his critics, "I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down" (Nehemiah 6:3), and the people's resolve to "strengthen their hands for this good work" (Nehemiah 2:18). After the walls rise, Ezra reads the law to the assembled people, and the book gives the famous words, "the joy of the LORD is your strength" (Nehemiah 8:10), alongside the confession that God is "a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful" (Nehemiah 9:17).
