About the Book of Leviticus

Leviticus is the third book of the Bible, the handbook of Israel's worship. It details the offerings and sacrifices of the tabernacle, the rules of cleanliness, and the annual Day of Atonement that made the people holy before God.

Its 27 chapters and 859 verses circle one great theme: "Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy" (Leviticus 19:2). Five kinds of offerings open the book — burnt, grain, peace, sin and trespass — each with its own ritual, and the great calendar of feasts closes it, from Passover to the Day of Atonement. Through every law runs the conviction that God is near and that his people are to mirror his character, and Leviticus 19 also preserves the golden rule in its earliest biblical form.
