Genesis is the first book of the Bible and the opening of the Torah, the five books of Moses. Its name means "beginning," and it tells the story of creation, the fall of humanity, the flood, and the family line that leads to Israel — from Adam to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph.
Its 50 chapters and 1,533 verses span more history than any other book of the Bible, from the creation of the world to the settlement of Jacob's family in Egypt. The opening account, with its "let there be light," is among the most quoted passages in all of Scripture.
