Hosea is the prophet of God's broken heart. Told to marry a woman who would prove unfaithful, he lived out the painful parable of Israel's betrayal of the LORD — and of God's refusal to give up on his people.
Its 14 chapters and 197 verses give the LORD's own cry, "I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings" (Hosea 6:6), and the diagnosis of Israel's ruin, "my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge" (Hosea 4:6). Yet the book is also full of tenderness — "how shall I give thee up, Ephraim?" (Hosea 11:8) — and it ends with the promise, "I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely" (Hosea 14:4).
