Amos was a shepherd and a dresser of sycamore trees, sent from the south to the wealthy northern kingdom of Israel. His message thunders against a society that is religious on the outside but sells the needy for a pair of shoes.
Its 9 chapters and 146 verses carry the pointed question, "can two walk together, except they be agreed?" (Amos 3:3), and the famous summons to "seek good, and not evil, that ye may live" (Amos 5:14) and to "let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream" (Amos 5:24). Amos ends by calling Israel to "prepare to meet thy God" (Amos 4:12), yet the final chapter glimpses restoration under a king from the line of David who will plant his people in their own land.
