About the Book of Obadiah

Obadiah is the shortest book of the Old Testament, a single chapter aimed at proud Edom, the descendants of Esau who stood by while their brother nation Judah was destroyed. Its message: those who gloat over another's disaster will reap what they sow.

Its 21 verses hold the diagnosis of Edom's fall — "the pride of thine heart hath deceived thee" (Obadiah 1:3) — and the law of recompense, "as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee" (Obadiah 1:15). But the little book ends on a bright note of reversal: "upon mount Zion there shall be deliverance" (Obadiah 1:17), and "saviours shall come up on mount Zion... and the kingdom shall be the LORD's" (Obadiah 1:21).
