Ezekiel is one of the great prophets of the Babylonian exile. Priestly by training, he received startling visions — a chariot of fire, a valley of dry bones — and delivered both stern judgment and glorious promise to the exiles.
Its 48 chapters and 1,273 verses contain the famous promise of a new heart: "a new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you" (Ezekiel 36:26), and the vision of the valley of dry bones revived (Ezekiel 37). The book opens with the prophet by the river Chebar in Babylon, where the glory of God appeared in a vision of wheels and living creatures. Ezekiel's closing chapters picture a restored temple and a river of life flowing out to heal the nations.
