Proverbs is the Bible's treasury of practical wisdom — short sayings about work, speech, money, friendship, discipline and the fear of the Lord. Much of it is attributed to Solomon, the wisest king of Israel.
Its 31 chapters cover nearly every corner of daily life, from a soft answer turning away wrath to the worth of a good name. Proverbs 3:5 and Proverbs 22:6 are among the most memorized verses in Scripture. The book opens with the figure of Lady Wisdom calling out in the streets and closes with a poem in praise of the virtuous woman. Its sayings were meant to be memorized and passed from parents to children, and many still travel in everyday English: "a soft answer turneth away wrath," "train up a child in the way he should go," and "iron sharpeneth iron."
