Philippians is Paul's warmest letter, written from prison to the church he loved most. Its theme is joy — joy in Christ that holds steady through hardship, conflict and even chains.
Its 4 chapters hold some of the Bible's most memorized lines: "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me" (Philippians 4:13), and the peace of God that passes all understanding (Philippians 4:7). The letter contains an early Christian hymn about Christ's humility — "who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God" — which scholars believe was already sung in worship before Paul wrote. Philippians also gives the church its most famous passage on anxiety, and its closing call to dwell on "whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure" has become a household phrase.
